2016 Premiums List

Vicki Solá first arrived at WFDU-FM in August, 1981. In the beginning, she hosted a weekly Jazz program, and served as Jazz Music Director for several years. After slipping more and more Salsa and Latin Jazz into these shows, she created her present program, Que Viva La Música, with station management's blessing, in February 1983. Vicki and her long running program provide the New York-metro community with authentic Salsa and Latin Jazz, produced by a singular mix of famous performers, plus artists rarely heard on commercial stations.
Her mission is to perpetuate the music of the greats--Machito, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, and Ray Barretto, and so many others--and also provide a venue for the countless talented, underrated veterans and new artists alike who are struggling to present their product to the public.

Outside of the station, Vicki has been featured on American Latino TV, served as an advisor to the Smithsonian Institution, and has written articles for internationally circulated trade periodicals, including Latin London Magazine, Descarga Catalog, and Latin Beat Magazine, for which she writes the column, "A Bite From the Apple." Vicki recently published a SciFi/Fantasy novel, The Getaway That Got Away (Full Court Press), and is planning a sequel. A member of several animal welfare organizations, she remains committed to fighting cruelty. She lives in Bergen County, New Jersey with her son Frank and rescued Shepherd-hound, Cookie.
